Kite Fishing

Kite fishing is the most effective way to catch Billfish known
to man. It is so exciting that once you try it you may never
fish any other way. There is nothing more exciting than seeing a
Billfish approach the live bait suspended from the sky by a
fishing kite. The colors the fish exhibit, the speed the fish
has and the thrill of the bite.
The way it works is the kite is flown from an
electric reel. The line attached to the kite has release pins
attached at different stages of the line, which allows the pins
to be spread out from 30 ft. behind the boat to the long bait,
which is 100 ft. behind the boat, were the noise and turbulence
of the boat is less noticeable to the fish.
The fishing line has a 15 ft leader attached
to it with a float at the swivel, that acts as a visual aid, so
you know where the bait is at all times. You can then raise and
lower the bait to the desired level, whether it is right on the
surface were the bait continues to struggle and send of a
distress signal to billfish and other game fish or lower the
bait to a waiting fish.
This method also allows you to continue
fishing after the hook up since the boat is not moving, allowing
for multiple hook ups. Capt Quinton Dieterle has helped pioneer
this method of fishing. He was a mate at the time when many of
today’s techniques were discovered.
Check out the photos above.
Photo one shows how the kite looks in
operation tilting to the left for maximum spread. We will also
fly a kite to the right side that tilts right.
The second photo shows the baits suspended from
the kite, note the red float is held above water as a visual
aid.
