Sailfish Tailing

March 3rd, 2010

The last weekend of fishing was exiting and productive. It was the kind of fishing we fish for. TAILERS….. That is when you chase the fish on the surface that are surfing south. You need a nice swell and a good north wind. Sunday they were tailing. We saw at least 10 fish on the top in one bunch. They are usually slow to bite when tailing but when they do it is like your first girl. Amazing!!!
We caught 7 sailfish that day and 5 the day before. Yesterday we had just 2 but only fished an hour.
The fish were all in 100 to 150 ft off miami. We used all 16vs penn international reels and stamina 15 pound line. Check back soon and i promise i will keep up with my reports. I know this yr has been so busy and i have slacked on writing the reports but I will stay on it. UPDATE****** We now have upgraded our Reels from the standard 20 internationals to the new PENN 16VS. It is smooth as silk.file:/

Good day with old customer

December 22nd, 2009

Tom Rogan a long time client of the Cutting Edge had another great day on monday afternoon. With the weather on the cold side, and the wide blowing a light 10 knots it was perfect for Sailfishing. We needed some food fish and found some dolphin on the edge, Several in the 5 pound class and one 18 pounder. It made for some good action but the best was still to come. With the kites out we found a slight edge in 200 ft. The left long went down and a sailfish came up. After a 20 minute battle the 40 pound sailfish was released. We then left to run to a area i thought might hold more fish. On the way mate Cap saw a free jumper off our side. We slowed down and pitched several baits out and had three bites. We caught two out of that. We then moved south a bit and set up the kites. Not long and we were hooked up to another sail. After that battle was over, we set up and as the sun was setting we had the bonus bite. Another Sailfish which we fought to the boat before the hooked pulled. Tough lose but a great day. 6 Dolphin and 4 out of  6 Sailfish. Not bad for an afternoon.

Cold Weekend produces good fishing

December 20th, 2009

With the Cold front pushing through over the weekend, the fishing made a dramatic change for the good. Lots of bait moving in and sailfish behind them. The best action has been south of Fowey light and a bit deeper than usual. Two hundred feet and out to almost 300 has been the magic depth. Also some nice kingfish and a few Dolphin have made it fun. Below is Saturdays lucky angler showing off his Sailfish which was released.

Stay tuned for move, we will be fishing all this week so we should have some exciting reports

Fishing Great on Friday

December 7th, 2009

Friday we started out looking for free jumpers and found one right in front of Fowey light. In about 60 ft, we tossed out a couple of Pilchards and WALA, 3 fish popped up and we were hooked up. After a long fight we caught two. Off shore we went in search of Dolphin and in about 4oo ft we found some grass with alot of fish. The Problem was the fish were mostly small. We did find one school that had some big fish and managed to catch about 20 keepers with several in the 15 pound range. We went back onto the edge and put the kites back out. We caught a double header sailfish, several nice kingfish and a small shark. It was a nice finish to a great day on the cutting Edge

Fishing Picking uP

November 1st, 2009

This weekend i believe was the beginning of the season, with conditions that did not look great we were able to still get a couple of Sailfish and some small dolphin. The sailfish we caught were on the Kite in 100 ft of water of Fowey light. We caught the dolphin under Hawks in 300. The cold front we having moving in this week should produce some more action as the bait continues to move south. We have also noticed some nice Mackerel in the bay and around bug light. That is always a great sign of winter fish moving south. Tight lines

Fishing getting Better

October 7th, 2009

At the end of last week the fishing peaked. We had 40 big Dolphin on Thursday and Friday and some more on Saturday, Sunday slowed down and Monday and Tuesday the Kingfish started to bite. We had 14 today on a half day. For the rest of the week we are not sure what to think. Any day the Dolphin could show back up or Maybe the Sailfish will be balling bait off shore. I am thinking after the first front it could get really good. But, till then the fishing is still good> The kings keep a bend in the rod and the Dolphin are tasty on the plate. Tight lines

Finishing off a slow month with a Blue Marlin

August 31st, 2009

Fishing the Islamorada swordfish tournament this past weekend took a turn in a different direction. Fishing a flat calm night of Pig Pine Key we drifted 5 squid at different depths in hopes of a Swordfish. But at 11:30 when the reel started to scream i grabbed the rod and began the fight.  Hoping for a Sword we worked the fish gently as possible, but that was not working. The fish began  to sound to the bottom, 1400 ft. With about 100 ft to spare the fish stopped. I began to reel and the fish turned and came strait to the surface and jumped, somewhere, we could not see it because it was so dark. After a fight on the surface and still believing it was a sword the fish sounded again and died. I pumped for another hour to finally see the fish. At first glace we thought we had the tournament winner. Not to be! It was this 269 pound Blue Marlin. We tried for sometime to revive the fish but it was showing no life at all. Most likely it died at the bottom and i reeled it up dead. The fish did not go to waste though, it was given for food to a local charity, and spread out among the crews at the dock.  We did also manage to catch a swordfish in the 80 pound class and on the second night I caught another sword in the 100 pound class which gave a  3 way tie for 3rd. Based on time we ended up in 5th.
